Our Services

We are a fee-only, financial planning firm firmly rooted in the CFP Board of Standard's financial planning process

A typical engagement, or relationship, begins with a free Initial Consultation (IC) to see if there is a good fit between your needs and our services.  We typically meet in our offices, but we do make “house calls” in some situations.  During the IC meeting we explore and discover how and if we can work together.

We offer four different programs based upon life stage and typical needs as listed below.  For a more detail description of each programs, click on the title of the program :

Initial Financial Planning Review Program:

This program supports clients in taking what may be the first step to align your finances so you can achieve what you want in life. The Initial Financial Planning Review Program is a fixed-fee, limited engagement with a beginning and an end. Although this service happens at one point in time, we call it an “Initial” Financial Planning Review because we believe that financial planning is a process, not just a product and ideally is reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Initial Financial Planning Review clients are from all stages of life. They seek advice and guidance in understanding how to best accomplish their goals and protecting what they have.

Focused Engagements:
Do you need more insurance? Will your college fund cut it 10 years from now? How about converting that employer retirement plan to an IRA when changing jobs?  You’re not sure.
Some people want advice on a specific financial decision. It may be a second opinion or validation what another advisor has suggested or what they have decided themselves. It may concern a broader financial topic such as retirement or college planning, insurance, estate planning, debt restructuring or investments. It may be a more specific issue, like a specific investment, financing a house, refinancing, leasing a car, a major purchase, , or a specific insurance issue, etc.  Whatever it is, we can help you evaluate objectively to avoid pitfalls, to examine options, or to reassure you the idea is sound.

Topical Questions

Retirement Planning:

Retirement questions are never far below the surface. When can I retire?  Can I retire early? Will we have enough?  What’s needed to insure we can meet our lifestyle?  Now that I’ve retired, what’s best to maintain my income?  Will I outlive my income?  We know we don’t have enough—what are our options?

While these questions may require a more complete financial planning engagement, we can give high-level guidance based on your goals and objectives, unique circumstances, preferences, and desired lifestyle. At minimum, you’ll learn what questions to ask and what immediate issues need to be addressed.

Employer Retirement Plans:

What about those 401k, 403b, & 457 plans? Are you using them correctly and getting the most out of them?

Employer plans can be confusing. Many people put money in their plans and forget about them.  But to reach your goals, decisions about what plans to use, how much to set aside, and how to invest the balances can be critically important to defining your long term retirement nest egg.  You do need to pay attention and we can help you objectively assess your options and make specific recommendations among the choices you have.  This is important, no matter what your age.

IRA's (Traditional, SEP, Roth, SIMPLE):

As a self employed individual, or as a wage-earning household, what individual retirement savings vehicles are available – and which should you be using?

Whether or not you work for wages or are self employed, several non-employer sponsored retirement arrangements are available. Obviously these become more important when self employed. Strategies and tactics for using traditional and Roth IRA’s, SEP and SIMPLE plans are reviewed, either as standalone retirement planning tools or as integrated with other retirement planning strategies.

Education Planning:

Are you saving enough money for your children’s, grandchildren’s, or even your own education?

Depending on your circumstances, there are a variety of options, all with often-complex tax and retirement implications.  We can review your options and make recommendations for your unique situation.

Risk Management:

Are you protected from the unexpected?

We examine your ongoing financial risks and how they apply to your assets and income. Where some form of insurance – life, property/casualty, health, disability, long term care or other -- is indicated, we make recommendations in light of your risk and current coverage. We help you decide if you have the right kind and the right amount of insurance from a financial planning perspective.  You may be putting yourself at risk in certain areas or may be paying for insurance you really don’t need. We do not sell insurance; rather, we objectively assess your needs and policies to determine what makes sense for your situation.

Estate Planning:
If something happens to you or to a family member, are your affairs in order?

We evaluate your existing estate planning documents and review your financial affairs from a “big picture” perspective.  The goal is to make them consistent with your current circumstances and to ensure they are in order to avoid the probate process delays and expense.  The focus extends beyond wealth transfer and taxes into such issues as health care directives, powers of attorney, and guardianship for children. We do not do practice estate planning law, but do assess what may be missing or what may cause problems down the road.

Wealth Distribution:
How do you get enough golden eggs to support your lifestyle without killing the goose?

Wealth Distribution is one of the most important services that a financial consultant can provide. Wealth distribution strives to provide the client enough cash flow to maintain a desired lifestyle while preserving the asset base. Wealth distribution planning requires a careful and highly individualized balance of capital preservation and current and future payouts. It goes beyond individual standard of living to include charitable intentions, and ultimately, family transfer.  Lighthouse Financial Planning carefully listens to your intentions, then crafts and manages a plan to achieve your ongoing wealth distribution objectives. Like Investment Planning, Wealth Distribution is usually part of a more comprehensive Ongoing Wealth Management engagement. However, Lighthouse Financial Planning can build Wealth Distribution plans in focused engagements where warranted.

Referral to Preferred Resources:

What if I need to see a specialist?

At Lighthouse Financial Planning, our specialty is providing big-picture appraisal and management of your financial situation, with particular emphasis on “connecting all of the dots.” But frequently more specialized care is required in specific areas, such as taxes, insurance or estate planning. As such, we have a network of professional specialists in most financial and legal disciplines. When we recommend resources for our clients, our reputation is on the line, every time. In an effort to communicate what is important to us and our clients in the referral process, we created a system to double check our gut “feelings” about those to whom we might refer.
LFP Preferred Resources (PR’s) are professionals dedicated to serving individuals and their families by offering quality, service, value and professionalism.  They must be focused on the sincere best interests of the people Lighthouse Financial Planning serves.  Just as a reminder, we do not accept referral fees from other professionals.
